What Is New in the 2026/27 Nations League

This is the fifth edition of the competition and the first with quarter-finals in League A — the single biggest structural change since the tournament was introduced.

  • 54 teams. Every UEFA member association enters, so there is no qualification round and no team sits the competition out.
  • Leagues A, B and C hold 16 teams each, drawn into four groups of four. Each team plays six matches, home and away against the other three.
  • League D holds six teams in two groups of three. Those teams play four matches each and sit out two of the six matchdays.
  • League A now feeds into quarter-finals. The top two from each group advance to a two-legged knockout round in March 2027 instead of only the four group winners reaching the finals.
  • The finals move to June 2027, played over five days in a single host country to be appointed during the season.

The draw was made in Brussels on 12 February 2026. Portugal arrive as defending champions.

League A Groups for 2026/27

League A carries the competition's headline fixtures. Group A3 is the one the draw handed a proper tournament feel: Spain, Croatia and England in the same group of four, with Czechia completing it.

Group A3 is the one to diary. England face Spain and Croatia twice each inside four matchdays, and all three reached the knockout stage of the last major tournament.

League Phase Dates: Two Windows, Six Matchdays

Leagues B, C and D: League Phase Fixtures

Leagues B and C mirror League A exactly — four groups of four, six matches per team. League D has two groups of three, which is why you will find two fixtures per matchday there rather than eight.

How the Route to the 2027 Finals Works

The new knockout layer is what makes this edition different, so it is worth following in order.

  1. League phase, September to November 2026. Six matchdays decide the final standings in all four leagues.
  2. League A quarter-finals, 25–30 March 2027. The eight teams that finished in the top two of their group meet in the knockout round, and the four winners go through.
  3. Relegation and promotion play-offs, 25–30 March 2027. Third place in League A groups plays off against a League B runner-up, and the same structure applies between Leagues B and C.
  4. Finals, 9–13 June 2027. Two semi-finals on 9 and 10 June, then the third-place play-off and the final on 13 June. The host is appointed by the UEFA Executive Committee in December 2026.
  5. League C and D play-offs, 23–28 March 2028. The bottom tier settles its promotion and relegation question in the following season's spring window.
Defending championsPortugal won the 2025 finals and open this campaign at home to Wales on 24 September.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the UEFA Nations League 2026/27 start?

The league phase opens on Thursday 24 September 2026, with Netherlands v Germany and Portugal v Wales among the first fixtures. Matchdays 1 to 4 run until 6 October, and matchdays 5 and 6 are played in the 12–17 November window.

How many teams are in the 2026/27 Nations League?

All 54 UEFA member associations take part. Leagues A, B and C hold 16 teams each in four groups of four, and League D holds six teams in two groups of three.

What is the new format for 2026/27?

League A has added a quarter-final round. The top two from each League A group go into a knockout round on 25–30 March 2027, and those four winners contest the finals on 9–13 June 2027.

When are the Nations League finals in 2027?

The finals run from 9 to 13 June 2027, with semi-finals on 9 and 10 June and the third-place play-off and final on 13 June. The host is appointed in December 2026.

How many matches are in the Nations League 2026/27 league phase?

The league phase runs to 156 matches across six matchdays, 26 per matchday. Matchdays 1 to 4 in September and October carry 104 of them -- eight each in Leagues A, B and C and two in League D -- and matchdays 5 and 6 in November supply the remaining 52.

Yes. League phase fixtures can be drawn, because each group is settled on points over six matches rather than by elimination. A draw is worth one point to each side, and the group tables are decided on points first and then goal difference.

Which jerseys should I buy for the international break?

Start with the teams you actually watch. A home shirt for your national team covers every matchday of the group stage, and a second shirt from a different tier keeps the wardrobe useful through the November window.
